A Year on Court Street: Notes from the Neighborhood

I have run a lot of dining rooms, but I have never felt a corner adopt a place quite the way Carroll Gardens adopted Madcap. A year in, I know the regulars' orders before they sit, which strollers belong to which tables, and who is coming in for a quiet coffee and who wants to talk.

That is the thing nobody tells you about a neighborhood cafe. The food matters, the bar matters, but the real product is the feeling that you can walk in alone and not be alone. Rainy Tuesdays are my favorite shifts for exactly that reason.
